CINEBEASTS

Thanks to everybody who came out to Saturday’s 16mm Tom Stathes Cartoon Carnival bonanza! After mounting our biggest show yet, we reaped the delicious fruits of enforced old-timey debauchery the way only Cinebeasts can. Attendees ranged from giggly children to post-retiree cartoon maniacs, with the usual mixture of erudite youth and adventurous a-dults caught in the crossfire.

Special thanks are due as well to Vaudeville Park for hosting the show (replete with free custom cocktails) and, obviously, CB photographer Shameel Arafin for documenting. His photos are viewable here.

This is the little drop-in we did with Tom Stathes, curator/archivist/projectionist of NYC’s biggest private collection of 16mm cartoons. The collection in his house in Flushing, Queens has over 800 cartoon reels, which he’s been collecting since the age of 10.

This Saturday, Cinebeasts is proud to present the fifth edition of his traveling roadshow: a two-part program of hand-selected 16mm treasures abandoned by history and reactivated by whiz kid curator Stathes. Luddites, romantics, nostalgists, pop culture theorists, enemies of censorship, lovers, archivists, nerds, kids-at-heart, actual kids and armchair film historians are all welcome!

The evening also promises an OPEN BAR with custom cocktails, free popcorn, a bake sale to benefit Cinebeasts, and some classic 78rpms jazz records following the cartoons.
